While I’m on the subject of the London 2012 Closing Ceremonies, I have to talk about the moment that made me leap out of my seat and yell at my coworkers; that moment was during the 2016 Rio de Janeiro showcase when Seu Jorge made his way on stage.

Now, Seu Jorge may not be terribly well known to North American audiences, but the silky smooth-voiced Brazilian was a sight to behold strutting around in a sparkling white suit. Some of you may have been unknowingly exposed to Seu if you have watched any of Wes Anderson’s films, namely The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou. Seu Jorge acts in the film and is seen performing the soundtrack throughout, a soundtrack that consists almost entirely of acoustic David Bowie covers sung in Portugese.

Hopefully my excitement about Jorge’s performance will inspire you to look up some of his music, mainly the album “Cru” and his collaboration with Almaz. I have linked his Bowie cover “Life on Mars” above.

Sometimes I forget how perfect Seu Jorge’s cover of “Life on Mars?” is. I remember the moment I realized, while sitting in the theater for The Life Aquatic, that I was hearing David Bowie in Portuguese.

This is one of my favorite things about Director Wes Anderson — not his inventive sets, but his keen aural sensibilities. The first time I saw the trailer for The Royal Tenenbaums, it was the inclusion of “Me and Julio Down by the Schoolyard” that first shivered through me, made seeing the film an absolute necessity. Even now, The Royal Tenenbaums’ music so acutely affects every scene — from the arresting first notes of “These Days” when Margot disembarks from the Green Line bus to meet Richie, to the haunting bathroom scene with Elliott Smith’s “Needle in the Hay,” to the subsequent moment when the pair are in Margot’s tent together and Nick Drake quietly transitions into “Ruby Tuesday.”

In the liner notes of The Life Aquatic soundtrack, David Bowie said, “Had Seu Jorge not recorded my songs in Portuguese, I would never have heard this new level of beauty which he has imbued them with.”
